Organic Meats – what is this all about?
The organic meats are different from regular meats in the way the farmer raised the animals prior to butchering. Organic meats should be certified through one of certification organizations.
Farmers need to follow strict organic guidelines in the production of the meat product. Meats certified organic are born on farms and raised with the maximum of respect and animal dignity. Beef cattle are often free to roam the farm for water, food, sunshine and outdoor air at all times. They usually are not raised in a pen.
How do you distinguish between organic and regular meats?
Anything which goes into an organic farm animal must also be organic. The pastures where the animals graze in must be organic itself. Organic fodder and grains are fed to the animals. On these farms organic pest control are used. No chemical or synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers are applied to local fields or pastures.
Organic animal farms must have explicit maintenance practices to preserve the natural surroundings and the soil in that particular area. No organic meat can be certified organic if the animal are fed with any growth hormones, steroids, animal byproducts or any antibiotics. Animals are let to eat in the pastures. Make sure the water is free from any contaminants.
What happens when the organic animals are sick?
Organic animals are removed from the program if they become sick and needed antibiotics. As soon as their illness is discovered, they are removed from the herd. While antibiotics are an excellent way to treat bacterial infections, there is always the risk of developing strains of bacteria. These bacteria are resistant and no one knows the any health effects to consumers who eat those meats. Antibiotics speed the growth of the cattle that seem to grow using less feed and because of the resistance. Sick animals sometimes cannot be treated and dies of their illness.
Growth hormones are eliminated from the production of organic meats. However researchers are uncertain on the effect of this practice on consumers who eat non-organic meats. Many of the organic meats comes from animals grown from birth on small farms. The animals has free range to move around on the pasture and to eat when it wants to. Such animals generally are healthier than the regular cattle and are treated more humanely. These animals are allowed to mate as they wish, adding to the sustainability of the farming practice.
A boon or bane
Many of these organic meat is from bull meat. And bull meat is one of the finest meat around. Farmers who raise bulls and sell are called seed stock producers. They must provide a notary stating that their bulls are not raised using antibiotics or growth hormones from the time of their birth. Such documents should be at least twenty months prior old while buying the animal.
Organic meats, may be somewhat more expensive than the non-organic meat. In general, however, the meat is fresh and the consumer can guarantee that there is nothing unhealthy in the organic meat product.
