Although both types of products may look the same, organic foods meet specific production standards including specific growing and processing conditions. Initially organic foods were grown on small farms, particularly those that were family owned and operated. At present, however, organic foods are grown on larger farms and are more readily in the market. In the US, parts of Europe and Japan, organic food production is currently federally regulated. In other countries also specific organic certification is required before these foods are sold.
Organic foods can be fresh fruits and vegetables, which are not processed and come directly from producers. Many of these products are available during certain times of the year only. One can also get organic eggs, dairy products and meat in their fresh and unprocessed forms.
Eggs and chickens
Organic eggs are generally provided by free-range chickens and not those kept in cages in large egg factories. Organic meats should not come from animals that have been treated with growth hormones, steroids or antibiotics. Processed organic foods can be found in the organic food section of the supermarket. But they are often more expensive than their conventional food counterparts. Processed organic foods may include canned goods, frozen products, prepared items and even snacks.
Benefits of Organic foods
In truth, processed organic foods need only contain a certain percentage of organic ingredients. For example, in Australia, food can be labeled “organic” if it contains at least 95% organic ingredients. In other countries, however, the percentage may be less than that. Even so, these non-organic ingredients must be free of artificial food additives. And no aspect of food can be processed using chemical maturation, genetic modification or irradiation techniques. In some cases, organic foods should be made using energy-saving techniques and packaged in recyclable or biodegradable materials.
It is not always easy to identify if your food is really organic. Sometimes, you need to buy directly from an organic farmer in order to be sure that the food is organic. More recently, however, foods that are organic can be identified by government labeling, stating that the food is “certified organic”.
