Are they Worth It? Arguments against Organic Foods
Consumers have now the option of buying foods from regular farms that use chemical pesticides and herbicides or organic-farmed foods that use only natural products. Organic foods are clearly more expensive and some consumers wonder if the extra expense is worth it.
While foods that are not grown using organic techniques will definitely contain residues of one or more types of pesticides. Some study found that organic products also contain pesticide residues but only one-third of conventional products. The potential for pesticide ingestion of organic food still exists so this type of food should be washed just like other products. Unfortunately, there are no rules on how much pesticide use is tolerable.
Natural chemicals are carcinogenic
Another study show that up to half of all “natural chemicals” used in food production have been found to be carcinogenic when tested. Chemists argue whether any chemicals placed on foods are safe. And there are also doubt that any residue of chemical food has the capacity to cause cancer.
There are also another group looking at organic foods and their ability to sustain the population of the land. However, will organic farming alone can keep up with the world’s food demands? In addition, some farmers consider that the soil benefits found in organic agriculture are due to good crop rotation. This in fact is nothing to do with current organic techniques.
Organic farmers have a longer time keeping their crops free of mold, pests and other diseases. This results in lower product quality and higher crop losses at the end of the growing season. Another claim is that growing only organic tomatoes would consume more than 600 percent more soil than growing in conventional methods.
Use of pesticides in growing organic crops
Most people believe that organic products are completely free of pesticides. In fact, this is not true. Organic farmers aim to use as few pesticides as possible. But these chemicals are still used to some extent. In addition, some organic pesticides contain an excess of copper – a heavy metal. Copper leaks in the soil, accumulates and can cause health problems like other pesticides. Other pesticides approved for use in organic agriculture also have some toxicity. The pesticide known as sabadilla has been shown to be toxic to bees and is being studied as a potentially toxic substance in larger animals and humans. This is where arguments against organic foods come into picture.
Interestingly, organic pesticides need to be extensively tested before they are to be used to grow products. However “organic pesticides” do not have the same requirements and can be as toxic as their conventional counterparts.
Choice is yours
Organic foods are more expensive to grow and therefore are more expensive to buy than regular foods. This means that organic foods are less available to people living at lower income levels. The cost difference for organic foods is approximately ten to forty percent higher in the average cost compared to organic foods. Every family has to make their own decision as to whether or not to go “organic” and buy only organic foods. Some experts consider it worth the extra cost for consumers to buy organic food, while others question the real benefit of buying them. Arguments against Organic Foods is on a high because they are more expensive to grow and are thus more expensive to purchase than regular foods.
